For local self-hosting, yes - an NVIDIA RTX 3080 or better is recommended for reasonable speed. CPU generation works but is very slow (minutes per image). Alternatively, use the Stability AI API and pay per image with no hardware requirement.
The model weights are free to download and use locally - you pay only for electricity and hardware. The Stability AI cloud API charges per image. Hugging Face Spaces also offers free limited access.
LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) lets you train a small additional model on 10-30 of your own images, then apply it to SD to generate consistent characters, products, or visual styles. It is the most practical way to get brand-consistent AI image output.
Midjourney produces better out-of-the-box photorealistic and artistic images with no setup. SD wins on control, cost, fine-tuning, and local privacy. Most professionals use both for different jobs.
